Volcanoes National Park is located within the virunga Mountains that are shared between Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic republic of Congo. It covers 160 km2 (62 sq mi) of rain forest , its having 5 volcanoes out of the 8 volcanoes that make up the virunga Massif  which include Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.

About Golden Monkey

The Golden monkey in Rwanda are found within the virunga Mountains that are shared between Rwanda, Uganda and Democratic Republic of Congo . Its among the primates found within the virunga Massif, and only habituated for trekking in Rwanda & Uganda at the moment.

Unlike the other monkey species, the golden monkeys are gorgeous in appearance and their watching is unique from others as they have bright colored fur with long golden hair mixed with orange.

Golden monkeys live in troops of about 100 lead by an Alpha male, and mostly feed on bamboo shoots, a variety of seasonal fruits, bamboo leaves, lichens, sprouts, flowers, leaves and small invertebrates.

Rwanda Safaris recommends golden monkey trekking in Uganda & Rwanda as those of Democratic Republic of Congo is not sure deal like the case for the two destination . In D R Congo, its stated that they can also be found in Kahuzi Biega National Park & Virunga national park but we never saw them on our study visit in 2016, 2018 and not recommended but we recommend gorilla trekking in Congo.
