Lying on the border of Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu is one of the Great lakes on the African continent geographically located in the Albertine Rift, the western branch of the East African Rift. It flows into River Ruzizi which flows southwards into Lake Tanganyika.
With an estimated total surface area of about 2,700 square kilometers, Lake Kivu stands as the eighth largest lake on the African continent. Its surface sits at a height of 1,460 meters above the sea level with a maximum depth of 475 meters and mean depth of 220 meters thus making it the world’s twentieth deepest lake by maximum depth and thirteenth deepest by mean depth. The lake is shared between Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo and almost 58% of its waters lie within DRC borders.

Gisenyi
Renamed Rubavu, Gisenyi is a large town encompassing several hills and amazing features including the unique Lake Kivu. In the area, there’s amazing buildings including international standard hotels, trendy bars, beach resorts and many others along its shores.
Kibuye
Situated about 100km south of Gisenyi, Kibuye is another town where Lake Kivu spreads. Known as the prettiest of all the lake’s towns, Kibuye comprises of a several features including rainforests, hills, valleys and mountainous areas. For the August travelers, you will have scenic views of thousands of yellow billed kites around the lake waters during their annual migration. The town also has a lot of beautiful accommodation facilities like hotels, lodges and bars where travelers can spend their night and also entertain their lives.
Rusizi
Located at the southern end of Lake Kivu, Rusizi is another town where Lake Kivu crosses. The town is just 45 minutes away from Nyungwe forest national park thus making it easier for one to take part in chimpanzee trekking experience as well.
