Twin Lakes
The twin lakes in Rwanda are some of the amazing tourist attractions in the home of thousand hills. Located at the base of Mount Muhabura, these crater lakes – Burera and Ruhondo border each other thus regarded as twin lakes. Their geographic location like nearness to Volcanoes national park, a border with Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Bisoke and Mount Gahinga provides beautiful and adventurous views which attract a number of people to the beautiful country.
With breathtaking surroundings like mountains and forests, the lake Burera and Ruhondo have a multiple use to different people including the tourists and the local communities. They were formed as a result of volcanicity where River Nyabarongo which used to pass northwards was blocked by lava flows and led to the formation of these lakes.
Activities done at the twin lakes of Rwanda
Lake Burera and Ruhondo are home to a number of fish species and various birds which enable a number of activities to take place. Among these include;
Fishing
Have some good time with the locals while at the lakes as they teach you how to catch fish using different local tools like baskets, fishing nets and others.
Boat cruise
Have a relaxed moment while at the twin lakes during a boat cruise experience. During the activity, you will visit different islands like Cuza, Muhabura and others. While at some island, tourists are given a chance to explore different features like wildlife, terraced hills and the vegetation.
Photography
The twin lakes are known among the best places to offer great photographic scenery since they are surrounded by blue skies, blue crystal waters, green vegetation and others.
Bird watching
Lake Burera and Ruhondo are known for hosting diversity of birdlife around its shores and on different islands. These species can be watched while having a nature walk and a canoe. Among the birds to spot include; African fish eagles, sacred ibis, hammerkops and others.
Swimming
Due to the fact that the lakes are Bilharzia and crocodile free, visitors are free to come with their swimming costumes so as they can take part in the exercise. The lakes are about 180meters deep which only allows those with swimming experiences to take part.
Best time to visit the twin lakes
Lake Burera and Ruhondo can be visited all year around but the most favorable time is during the dry season which takes place from June to October and December to February.
